Chandeliers have long been cherished for their timeless elegance, remaining a popular lighting choice through the years. Our wide range offers an abundance of options, from sleek and minimalist designs to grand, opulent statement pieces. This wide variety ensures that you can find a chandelier that perfectly complements your home.
In the past, traditional chandeliers were somewhat limited in their design and style. Modern chandeliers, however, come in an extensive range of shapes, sizes, and materials. This diversity makes them suitable for a myriad of interior design styles. Whether you’re seeking a chic contemporary fixture or a classic ornate piece, we have a chandelier to match your taste.
What is a chandelier?
A chandelier is a type of lighting fixture that hangs from the ceiling and features multiple light sources. Originally, these light sources were candles, but today they are typically electric bulbs. Chandeliers were known for their ornate and decorative designs, frequently embellished with crystals and intricate details. However, the modern definition of a chandelier encompasses a wide variety of styles and materials, catering to diverse aesthetic preferences.
Contemporary chandeliers come in various colors, finishes, and materials. Popular metal finishes include chrome, brass, and gold, while glass components can range from frosted to colored. Additionally, chandeliers are available in many different sizes, making it easy to find one that complements your home's ambience, regardless of whether it leans towards traditional, modern, or eclectic styles. This versatility ensures that there is a chandelier to enhance the look and feel of any space.
Chandeliers can also reflect different periods with various styles available. Art Deco Chandeliers have the sleek, clean lines and chrome finishes associated with early 20th century lighting. Modern Chandeliers come in a variety of shapes and sizes to match contemporary design trends. To meet the demand of adding a chandelier to newer homes where the ceilings are lower, many modern chandeliers have been designed to be flush or fit closer to the ceiling.
At Tiffany Lighting Direct we know that not everyone wants an antique replica, which is why have a collection of modern chandeliers to offer a more minimalist hanging light. Our more modern styles come in polished chrome finish, bronze, and gold.

Buying Guide For Chandeliers
Before you go ahead and start shopping for a chandelier there are several things you should consider: the size of the chandelier in relation to your room, and the drop of the chandelier.
Getting the Sizing Right
Firstly you should measure the height of your ceiling, to understand whether a hanging light will encroach into the room. The last thing you want is for a large ceiling to dominate the space.
Ceilings Under 8ft
A low ceiling is unlikely to be able to accommodate most chandeliers, unless it is a very flush or semi-flush light. A light that hangs lower than 1 foot from the ceiling is likely to get in the way of family members and visitors over 6ft.
Ceilings Between 8ft - 10ft
This a typical ceiling height for homes in the UK, and is high enough to hang a variety of pendant lights or lanterns a suspension or chain. In many cases, chandelier chains can be shortened if the drop is too low.
The key is too not overwhelm the space with a ceiling light that has too many many tiers or arms! The exception is if you have a chandelier to hang over something, like a dining room table. If your chandelier is above a table, try to leave a gap of at least 2ft.
Ceilings Higher Than 10ft
If your ceiling is higher than 10ft, you’re likely able to accommodate any chandelier! For larger rooms with high ceilings, you may consider a more expansive chandelier with a greater number of arms to fill the space. Unless the arms are wide, a 3 or 5 light chandelier may not be big enough for the space.
Room Style
- Traditional or Classic Design: Opt for chandeliers with crystal or glass accents to complement the room’s elegant decor.
- Modern or Contemporary Design: Select sleek, minimalist designs that align with the room’s modern aesthetics.
Purpose of the Chandelier
- Focal Point: If the chandelier is intended to be a centerpiece, choose a larger and more ornate design to draw attention.
- Ambient Lighting: For providing general light, a smaller and simpler chandelier will probably suffice.
Practical Tips
- Height Above Surface: When installing above a dining table, leave about 30-34 inches of space between the table and the bottom of the chandelier. For entryways or living rooms, ensure the bottom of the chandelier is a minimum of 7 feet above the floor.
- Chandelier Shape: Consider the shape relative to the room. Conventional round chandeliers suit round tables and square or rectangular rooms, while linear chandeliers are ideal for long, rectangular tables and spaces.
By considering these factors—room size, ceiling height, room style, and the chandelier's purpose—you can select a chandelier that not only illuminates your space effectively but also enhances your home’s decor.
Best Bulbs For a Chandelier
The best lightbulbs for interior lighting are LEDs, as opposed to halogen or older incandescent bulbs. LEDs are brighter, more energy-efficient, and can last up to twenty times longer than an incandescent lightbulb.
Oval or candle-shaped LED bulbs help to maintain the traditional aesthetic of a chandelier as they imitate the appearance of a candle, which would’ve been used on a chandelier in the past.
Which rooms can chandeliers be used in?
Chandeliers can be used in a variety of rooms throughout the home to create a dramatic and elegant look. With the possible exception of the kitchen due to the potential buildup of oil and grime from cooking, there are many other rooms where a chandelier can shine:
- Living Room: A chandelier can serve as a stunning focal point. Consider dimmable and color-changing styles to set the perfect tone for relaxation and entertainment.
- Dining Room: Chandeliers are a popular choice for dining rooms, providing ample lighting for the table and adding an elegant touch. Ensure the chandelier is size appropriate to the table and the height of the ceiling for a balanced look.
- Bedroom: In the bedroom, a chandelier can create a sumptuous and luxurious atmosphere. Pair a traditional chandelier with deep toned fixtures for a classic boudoir effect.
- Entryway: A chandelier in the entryway makes a bold statement and creates a homely, warm and welcoming atmosphere for guests.
- Bathroom: With the right IP safety rating, chandeliers can be used in bathrooms to add a touch of glamour and create a luxurious bathing space.
- Home Office: A chandelier can add a touch of sophistication to a home office, making it a more inspiring and elegant workspace.
- Walk-In Closet: For an opulent touch, a chandelier can be installed in a walk-in closet, enhancing the space with a glamorous feel.
Chandeliers can enhance any room where you want to add lighting with elegance and sophistication. With a wide variety of styles, sizes, and materials available, you can find the perfect chandelier to complement your décor and create the desired atmosphere in any space.
Cleaning Your Chandelier
Chandeliers are intricate and are prone to collecting dust, so its advisable to give them a clean to keep them gleaming. Here’s our expert advise of how to properly take care of your chandelier:
- Switch off the power to the light at the fuse board
- Unscrew each bulb and carefully give them a clean with a cloth
- Using a feather duster, gently dab at the areas that have built up dust and cobwebs
Do not use a liquid glass cleaner or an aerosol spray as this could damage the electrics and the fittings.
